The most expensive Pokémon cards ever sold

The most expensive Pokémon card ever sold is the PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator owned by Logan Paul, which sold for $16,492,000 (including buyer's premium) at Goldin on February 16, 2026. It is also the most expensive trading card of any kind ever sold at auction. Behind it, a handful of contest and tournament prize cards, Gold Star cards and graded 1st Edition Charizards make up the rest of the top tier.

This list covers the biggest reported public sales as of October 2026. Prices include the buyer's premium where the auction house publishes it. Record prices move fast, so treat any ranking as a snapshot.

Why the Pikachu Illustrator is worth so much

The Illustrator was never sold in a pack. It was a prize in a 1998 illustration contest run by the Japanese magazine CoroCoro Comic, with art by Atsuko Nishida, the original designer of Pikachu. Only 39 copies were handed out, and the card even says "Illustrator" where the usual "Trainer" text would be. Logan Paul bought his copy, the only one graded PSA 10, in 2021 for $5,275,000. That purchase made Guinness World Records, and so did the 2026 sale. Read the full story in Logan Paul's Pikachu Illustrator.

What the most valuable Pokémon cards have in common

  • Tiny print runs. Contest and tournament prizes (Illustrator, Trophy Pikachu, Art Academy promos) exist in dozens or low hundreds of copies.
  • A perfect grade. A PSA 10 of a famous card can sell for several times a PSA 9. Grade population, the number of copies at each grade, is what really sets the price.
  • Charizard and Pikachu. The two most collected Pokémon carry a premium on almost every card they appear on.
  • History. 1st Edition Base Set cards from 1999 are the cards most collectors grew up with, which keeps demand strong.
