1st Edition Pokémon cards

A 1st Edition Pokémon card has a small black "Edition 1" stamp on the left side of the card, just below the artwork. First edition cards were the first print run of the early Wizards of the Coast sets, from Base Set in 1999 to Neo Destiny in 2002. They are worth much more than the later "Unlimited" prints of the same cards.

Which sets have 1st Edition cards

  • Base Set, Jungle and Fossil (1999)
  • Team Rocket (2000)
  • Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge (2000)
  • Neo Genesis, Neo Discovery, Neo Revelation and Neo Destiny (2000–2002)

Base Set 2 and Legendary Collection were never printed in 1st Edition. After Wizards of the Coast's era, the 1st Edition stamp was not used on English cards.

1st Edition vs shadowless vs unlimited

  • 1st Edition: the stamp, plus no drop shadow on the art box. The rarest.
  • Shadowless: early Base Set prints without the 1st Edition stamp and without a shadow on the right of the art box. Rarer than unlimited.
  • Unlimited: the main print run, with a shadow on the art box and no stamp.

What are 1st Edition cards worth?

Value depends on the card and, above all, the grade. 1st Edition commons can sell for a few dollars, while holos like Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur sell for thousands to hundreds of thousands. A PSA 10 1st Edition Base Set Charizard sold for $550,000 at Heritage Auctions in December 2025. See the most expensive Pokémon cards and vintage Pokémon cards.

Japanese "1st Edition" cards

Japanese cards use a different system: some Japanese sets of the XY and Sun & Moon eras print a small "1st Edition" mark on the first print run, and the first print of the Japanese Base Set has no rarity symbol. These "No Rarity" cards are highly collectible.

How do I know if my Pokémon card is 1st Edition?

Look for the black "Edition 1" stamp on the left side, just under the picture.

Are all 1st Edition Pokémon cards valuable?

No. Commons and uncommons are often worth little. Holos and popular Pokémon in good condition are where the value is.
